Weingut Sybille Kuntz

The Riesling Lady

The story of the Sybille Kuntz estate is not merely a family chronicle; it is a narrative of an uncompromising quest for the ideal. Sybille Kuntz has built wines that are now globally recognized for its intellectual, pure, and powerful expression of the Mosel terroir.

Though the Kuntz family has been involved in winemaking, coopering, and wine merchantry for generations, Sybille initially chose a different path. She moved to Wuppertal to study business administration, hoping to leave the manual labor of the vineyards behind.

However, fate intervened. In 1981, while running a wine shop to fund her studies, she realized that the quality of available wines no longer met her high tandards. Recognizing that no one could produce the wine she envisioned better than herself, she returned to her roots.

The Kuntz family owns 20 hectares in the Mosel region biodynamically certified. But their most prized vines grow on the Grand Cru Niederberg-Helden hillside.

  • 100-Year-Old Vines: Some of these vines were planted in the 1920s. Because they grow on their original roots, they produce a depth of flavor you just can’t get from younger plants.

  • Extreme Sunlight: The vineyard is incredibly steep (a 70% slope). This allows the vines to catch the sun directly, while the Mosel River reflects extra light back up like a giant mirror.

  • Deep roots: Because the topsoil is thin, the vines have to "work" for water, pushing their roots 13 meters deep into ancient blue slate rock. This gives the wine its distinct mineral, crisp, and "stony" character.

Today, Sybille Kuntz stands as a symbol of the modern Mosel: bold, profound, and infinitely devoted to the Riesling grape.
